TORCH TOWER–THE LIGHTHOUSE REIMAGINED

To commemorate the 33 victims of the Concordia shipwreck in January of 2013, off Giglio Island, near Tuscany, we proposed the design of a ruptured tower, reimagining the form of a light house. Visitors weave through darkness and light as the ascend a spiral staircase, toward the observation deck and sky. This project also points to the idea of our shared humanity, and the porosity of boundaries between land and sea. We collaborated with illustrator, Nicolas Castagnola, below, to create an animation and enliven our structure.
Drawing by Valerie Schweitzer that shows the concept of solitary resilience and man’s encounter with boundless nature.
