PANGOLIN PAVILION

Proposed for Ambesoli Wildlife Preserve, 2018, in Kenya, Africa

Our pavilion won a citation by the Indi-based competition platform, Archasm in 2018. For our entrance structure to the park, we turned to the endangered pangolin for our inspiration to highlight the fragile balance between human beings and wildlife. We call for locally-made clay tiles by Kenyan ceramicists in polygon shapes that resemble pangolin scales; they are woven with thin cables that lay on top of a glue laminated scaffold. The overall effect is a kaleidoscopic screen through which to view the wonders of the African setting. NOTE–this pangolin inspired copies that were actually built in India –i.e. the parametric design of ANT Studio a year after the competition results were published.
